Cruise Ship or Life Boat? — Midweek Message

Cruise Ship or Life Boat? -- Midweek Message

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8

Cruise Ship or Life Boat?

I watched a show recently about the world’s most expensive cruise ships. One of the boats was equipped with basketball courts, restaurants, a Starbucks, a helicopter pad, and enough beds for 10,000 people! Talk about a luxurious ride! If you’ve ever been on a cruise before it can be fun to live a life of luxury for a week out at sea, but the problem comes when churches start acting like cruise ships. Instead of offering water-slides and all-you-can-eat shrimp like a cruise ship, sometimes churches get too caught up in getting comfy chairs, top-notch music, and the best programs. Sometimes people shop around town to find the church that is the most like a cruise ship. When a church starts acting like a cruise ship, comfort and pleasure become more important than the mission Jesus gives us. In Acts 1:8 Jesus commanded his church to go out and spread the good news of salvation to the ends of the earth. As a church, we join Jesus on that mission. Our mission is to preach the message that every single person is born sinful and deserving of hell but that Jesus Christ saved us and forgave us. Preaching the gospel might not always be an easy task. At times it might put us in uncomfortable situations. But instead of acting like a cruise ship, our church is a life boat. We do all we can to share the life-saving message of Jesus!

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, keep us always focused on sharing the gospel with others. Help us not to act like a cruise ship but instead like a lifeboat. Amen.

In Christ,

Pastor Tom
